Time and Collective Memory
Interview of Susan Rubin Suleiman

by Lucie Campos , 5 December 2013

Historical episodes of collective violence in the 20th century have given rise to a series of debates which can be seen as “crises of memory”, according to Susan Rubin Suleiman. As these crises of memory unravel, they have an impact not only on collective memory but also on literature and the public sphere.

Born in Budapest and trained in the United States, Susan Rubin Suleiman is professor of comparative literature at Harvard University. Her book Crises of Memory and the Second World War was published in 2006 and translated into French in 2012. She has also recently co-edited (with Jakob Lother and James Phelan) After Testimony: The Ethics and Aesthetics of Holocaust Narrative for the Future (2012) and French Global: A New Approach to Literary History (with Christie McDonald, 2010).

On Hungary, she has published (with Eva Forgács) Contemporary Jewish Writing in Hungary. An Anthology (University of Nebraska Press, 2003), as well as an autobiographical essay Budapest Diary: In Search of the Motherbook. Other publications include: Risking Who One Is: Encounters with Contemporary Art and Literature (1994), Subversive Intent: Gender, Politics, and the Avant-Garde (1990), Authoritarian Fictions: The Ideological Novel as a Literary Genre (1983).
